With an established trade in mainstream brews it's a brave step to dip your toe into the craft beer world. Cellarbrations at Willagee (Perth) is doing just this with a growing range of local and international beers. Owner John Ogden is no stranger to the liquor world, his family having been in the business since 1945; and from his point of view 'you are always learning in this business. After 30 years in the business and aware of the changing beer world ' and a changing demographic locally ' in 2012 he could see that the time was right to widen the beer range and take bold strides into craft beer. The core craft beer range is firmly rooted in local WA brewers, with brews from the likes of Nail Brewing, Last Drop, Feral Brewing, Mash, Little Creatures and Matso's. This support of the local brewer extends beyond bottles too; backed up with a Pegas Crafttap, Willagee delivers keg fresh beer from local brewers in Squealers (1ltr) and Growlers (2ltr). It's not just Aussies you'll find in store, however. Browse the shelves and you'll also find the likes of Kiwi craft favourites Yeastie Boys alongside European classics like Budvar. Elsewhere, the rotating roster of beers features the best of the eastern states and plenty of international flavour, with a nod towards the US and UK, meaning you can pick up the likes of Sierra Nevada and Brooklyn Brewery along with the more traditional Fullers. Manager Doug Gowers is charged with bringing the craft beer push to the folks of Willagee and surrounds. Hence the Willagee Beer Appreciation Club, which holds regular in-store tastings as part of the ongoing mission to turn this little piece of Perth into a craft beer haven. MB Photos by Sarah Hewer.
