Located just ten minutes south of Perth in the multicultural suburb of Victoria Park, the Netherlands-themed Dutch Trading Co is one of WA's standout beer venues, one with links to the award-winning The Classroom, Lucky Chan’s Laundry and Noodle Bar and the GrainCru beer community. This high calibre team behind it has assembled one of Perth’s finest and most expansive beer venues. It offers a rotating range of beers from lagers to double IPAs, stouts and sours that flow through the venue’s 18 taps, which include a dedicated nitro tap. More than 100 beers are available for takeaway purchase, including very rare selections from the USA and Europe. It’s a great way to try some beers and then take some home. With only a handful of serious beer focused venues in Perth, The Dutch Trading Co has quickly become a Mecca for a mix of beer nerds and curious locals. Regular quiz nights, whisky tastings and tap takeovers have created a solid following beyond the craft beer scene. The craft beer faithful are well catered for with events like the prestigious Cantillon Zwanze Day; Dutch Trading Co was the only venue in Australia selected to be part of the 2015 Belgian brewery's global sour beer celebration. The cavernous front room is themed with up-cycled ‘keg lights’, handmade benches conjured from old railway sleepers and subtle references to DTC’s national origins (yes, that includes clogs...). Theming there is ongoing and, at the end of 2015, will require the space closing for a while to complete the works. Meanwhile, out back is an equally welcoming function space with rough hewn benches, more of those keg lights and, beyond that, a large sandpit for kids with discerning parents. Between the two rooms is a kitchen creating new versions of classics like the Double Dutch burger (two patties with Dutch Smoked Gouda) and sharing boards featuring house made pickles and cured meats. Bittenballen, a Dutch style Meatball, and Thursday’s $1 Chicken Wings have quickly become venue favourites. With future plans including – funding and approvals willing – the construction of an on-site brewery, the future for The Dutch Trading Co – not to mention Perth's beer drinkers – is looking goed (it’s Dutch for good). *Guy Southern*
