Hilden Brewing Company was established by Ann and Seamus Scullion in 1981 in the courtyard of Hilden House the former home of the Barbour linen barons. Here the Scullions reintroduced into Ireland the tradition of a local brewery making beers of distinctive character and taste. Hilden is now the oldest independent brewery on the island of Ireland. William Barbour established his thread mill at Hilden in 1824. Barbour Threads grew rapidly and by the end of the 19th century it was the biggest linen thread company in the world with offices and mills in many international locations. Its chairman at the end of the 19th century was Milne Barbour, grandson of the founder of the company. Milne Barbour was a prominent figure in political and social circles and Hilden House was host to many famous people. A sister of Milne Barbour, Helen married Thomas Andrews, designer of the Titanic. They celebrated their wedding at Hilden House. Helen was not onboard the Titanic and later married Harland of esteemed shipbuilding company, Harland and Wolff. Wordsworth spent a night here en route to a family wedding and in the 1930’s Edward Prince of Wales (Edward VIII – renowned for his subsequent abdication) visited the House and the Barbour’s Hilden Mill. Located in the outbuildings of historic Hilden House we’re still under their watchful eyes along with their brewery manager son, Owen and daughter, Frances Maguire who is the general manager.
