Located on the French border, the small Flemish town of Bellegem has been home to the Bockor Brewery since 1892. Founded by Omer Vander Ghinste and handed down within the family, the brewery is now in the hands of fourth-generation owner/manager Omer-Jean Vander Ghinste. During World War II the brewer at that time was Omer-Remi. Having spent some time in the St. James Hospice in Paris as a refugee, he was inspired to create a line of beers called "Jacobins" in honor of the Dominican Friars that answer to that name in France and who had given him shelter in his time of need. Today the brewery is better known as a producer of lagers, but has maintained the expertise and equipment to produce excellent spontaneously fermented beers.
