Things to do: Carnival at Patras, Greece

One of the most popular world carnival events is Greek Carnival, called “Apokries”, which literally means “abstention from meat”. Traditionally it begins ten weeks before Greek Orthodox Easter and ends at the beginning of lent. The roots of the carnival festivities date back to ancient greece, particularly linked to the cult of Dionysus, god of wine and the liberation of the senses, to whom many festivals were consecrated.

For sure most popular greek carnival is Patras Carnival, greek city that attracts thousands of tourists every year. This carnival event has over 180 years of history and with its dances, parades, treasure hunts, it transforms the city! The main streets in the days of the parade are an amazing rainbow of craft masks, colors, parties and satire; tourists from all over the world come to enjoy the party, the allegorical floats, concerts and fireworks, of course there will be moments of tasting good craft beers.

Certainly better known for its wine production than craft beer, Greece has been recovering and promoting the knowledge of local beer in the last century. In ancient times the Greeks, who knew craft beer thanks to the Egyptians, defined this drink as a barbaric drink, inferior to wine, for this reason it was not particularly appreciated. In recent years, however, also thanks to the financial crisis, many young people have begun to brew craft beer opening several craft breweries in the peninsula, enhancing the genuine flavors of the raw materials present in the Greek territory.

There are many greek craft breweries producing craft beers, here you can know some of them, visit our website to find out more:
